3D Laser Scanning
by Geoma Surveys Limited
Historically, as-built measurement has been typically taken using total stations. However, as technology has evolved within the surveying industry, total stations have become increasingly supplemented by a rapid, efficient and precise technology: LiDAR (light detection and ranging). LiDAR enables the production of highly accurate digital measurements and images quickly and easily for use across a wide range of construction and engineering projects.
Laser scanning is a surveying method that can accurately measure and record precise locations and distances from objects, surfaces, buildings, and landscapes using LiDAR technology. Laser scanners produce and store information in the form of point cloud data, consisting of millions of 3D coordinate (XYZ coordinates) data points.
Geoma Surveys provides a comprehensive point cloud data capture service to final BIM using the latest Terrestrial 3D laser scanning technology. Our scanner can capture almost a million points per second to an accuracy of ±1mm. Following the crucial first step procedure of registration, a final point cloud is prepared as a result of merging the point clouds captured from multiple laser scanning locations throughout the site being modelled.
Advantages of 3D laser scanning
Fast data turnaround
By capturing millions of data points per second, one laser scanner can do in a day what would take a total station team a week.
Ultra-Accurate
With a simple non harmful laser scan, AEC experts can obtain exact site conditions in the form of an easy to access, detailed and digital format.
Cost effective
Significantly fewer working hours on site result in a service with better value for money. Cost savings are not just accrued through reduced man hours saved on site; with laser scanning producing highly precise digital copies of reality, the Architect or MEP designer can plan more accurately, with a higher degree of certainty and hence prevent costly disruption that relatively inaccurate and time-consuming other site measurement strategies can cause.
Inherently Safe
Using scaffolding or ladders to carry out detailed and accurate surveying at height can be very difficult and dangerous. With Laser scanning technology it is possible to survey millions of points on high ceilings, unreachable ductwork and problematic pipe work without the need to expose operators to potentially hazardous situations.
Highly Effective Coordination
Laser scanning can provide a realistic 3D model whilst avoiding the need for numerous, expensive site visits. Similarly, the ease at which 3D models can be shared and coordinated increases project awareness, while decreasing assumptions made about the site; an attribute that has become especially useful in this new remote working world.
